The Egyptian ICT sector has achieved great success & it has been able to be the most growing sector in the economy in the last period, as well as a very attractive one for both local and foreign companies. This was due to the promising investment opportunities & the huge expansion plans in the e-transactions. In recent years, the government has adopted an ambitious strategy for digital transformation through the launch of many initiatives and projects to support the economy and expand financial coverage, however there are still some challenges facing the transformation of the digital economy. In this context, Canada Egypt Business Council (CEBC) & The Egyptian Business Council for International Cooperation (ECIC) were honored to host the respected speaker, H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister Of Communications & Information Technology in the event held on Tuesday, July 02nd, 2019 & attended by those distinguished guests who were highly interested in discussing the opportunities & challenges facing the transformation of Egypt’s Digital Economy. In the opening remarks, Eng. Motaz Raslan, Chairman of CEBC & ECIC welcomed the presence of a large number of officials & experts, arab and foreign ambassadors, as well as members of CEBC &ECIC Eng. Motaz Raslan informed the audience regretfully that the Ambassador of Estonia to Egypt, H.E. Mr. Sander Soone, is leaving Egypt for a mission in another state & that his Excellency has had the greatest impact on the success of the political & economic relations between the two countries. He then wished him all the luck & conveyed that Egypt will always do remember & honor his presence. Another important announcement took place before the speech started. Eng. Motaz Raslan announced that CEBC & ECIC is signing a memorandum of understanding with the Ambassador of Malta to Egypt in a way to strengthen the bilateral economic & trade relations, as well as finding mutual business opportunities. He then expressed his hopes that this MOU will just be a good start for a continuous & fruitful cooperation between the 2 countries. Eng. Motaz Raslan then welcomed our honored speaker; H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of communications & Information Technology. During his speech, Eng. Raslan stressed on the role of digital economy in boosting economic growth & creating new economic opportunities, & yet that we have all the opportunities and resources that allow us to be a regional center and a fixture in that area. He mentioned that the digital transformation in Egypt has initiated many projects to support the economy & expand financial coverage, where it had made significant achievements that have helped lift the economy out of a tight situation. He added, that we have to admit we’re a bit late, maybe due to circumstances and daunting challenges that have hit the economy during the past eight years, which led to slower steps to the big shift but surely not stopping it. He pointed out that the ministry aims to increase the contribution of the telecom sector from the total GDP to 8% within 3 years. He said that the size of the world economy is $ 11.5 trillion, accounting for 15% of the total world GDP, the digital economy will jump to $ 2.5 trillion in 2025. The Minister of Communications & Information Technology, H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat, started his speech by confirming that the growth rate of the sector jumped to 16% at the end of the fiscal year ending in June compared to 13% in the same period last year. Telecom exports jumped to $ 3.3 billion in the last fiscal year 2018/2019, according to the ministry records. H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat also pointed to the number of workers in the sector which reached 170 thousands professionals so far targeting a quarter of a million workers in 2022. The minister then highlighted that the ministry’s aim in the next period is to increase exports in European, African and Arab countries. His excellency also stressed on the fact that the ministry is working with the World Bank in cooperation with the Postal Authority to allocate a program to provide funding for youth in the field of information technology. Dr. Amr Talaat added that the volume of investments in the information technology sector tripled in the fiscal year ending in June compared to last fiscal year, pointing out that Egypt is the most growing investment in this sector compared to the countries of Central and East Africa. His excellency also declared that there’s a development transformation plan for the Postal Authority to provide all postal services at the level of the whole Republic. Dr. Amr Talaat then affirmed that the ministry is working on launching 20 new services during the year 2019 The floor was opened for Questions and Answers session, where several questions and suggestions were discussed considering the opportunities & challenges facing the transformation of Egypt’s Digital Economy.
